Personal perspective: As an economist, I find it fascinating how the Sri Lankan Rupee (SLR) has shown resilience despite global economic uncertainties. The latest data reveals a sharp decline in the dollar’s selling rate in Sri Lanka—this trend signals a shift in demand for the local currency amid rising inflation and geopolitical tensions. However, the rupee still maintains a strong position, which may be due to increased foreign investment in India and the South Asian region. According to Seylan Bank, the US Dollar’s buying rate dropped from Rs. 329.25 to 323.25, while its selling rate fell from 347 to 337. This reflects a preference among investors to hedge against currency risks, especially during periods of economic volatility. What makes this particularly intriguing is the observation that the rupee’s strength coincides with a slowdown in the dollar’s performance globally. In my opinion, this situation underscores a growing reliance on regional economies and highlights the importance of diversification in international trade strategies. From a psychological standpoint, the weakening of the dollar could signal a transition toward more stable monetary policy, which might have long-term implications for global financial markets.
